Why Should You Have Your Crooked Teeth Straightened?

Many adults within the UK have crooked or wonky teeth.  A large proportion of these people wish to have straighter teeth so that they look more aesthetically pleasing in photos.  If you have crooked teeth, chances are you have felt self-conscious about your smile at some point, and you may even resort to covering your mouth with your hand when you talk or laugh.  However, crooked or misaligned teeth don’t just look unsightly – they can also cause long term health issues if they are left as they are.

So, what causes crooked teeth?

It may be that your adult teeth simply grew out of alignment when they first came through after losing your milk teeth.  As most children lose their milk teeth one at a time, the adult teeth come through at different times, meaning that they may not have the support from another adult tooth to encourage them to grow into a straighter position.

Alternatively, adults who have lost teeth later in life may find that their remaining teeth will attempt to change position so as to try to fill any gaps.  This can lead to a mouthful of wonky teeth which can lead the sufferer to experience tooth pain or increased sensitivity.

Why should you address your misaligned teeth?

Although you may wish to have your teeth straightened for cosmetic reasons, there are also some good health reasons to straighten your teeth.  Crooked teeth can actually fail to support the muscles in the jaw area, which can lead to pain and even injury.  Teeth which cross over can cause difficulties in cleaning, as the toothbrush may not be able to reach all areas of the tooth.  This can then lead to tooth decay and a build of up plaque, which in the long term can cause pain and perhaps gingivitis.

How can you get your teeth straightened?

Thereare a number of different solutions which your dentist may be able to suggestto you to help to rectify the issue.  Six Month Smiles® is a recognised method of efficient and effective teeth straightening, and has been widely used around the world.  The treatment is very discreet, meaning that most people will not notice that you are undergoing any treatment, as the clear aligners are designed to fit neatly over your teeth.  The aligners will be replaced every couple of weeks as your teeth gradually start to move into a more desirable position, with most people achieving their preferred result within just six months.
